Teaching Spanish (behind the scenes)

by EDITH LUNA VILLANUEVA
Posted on 26 May, 2010

I was preparing the class "Fútbol, Pasión de Multitudes" as the World Cup season seems to have started already and, to my surprise, after finding the Official song in its bilingual version (English and Spanish) I realized it had lost all its essence, since there is no mentioning to, for instance, famine, poverty, wars-i.e. reality in the poorest regions of Africa- which are part of K'naan's original message. So sad...
All the same, here I share the bilingual version of Waving flag and links to both versions lyrics.

Revising material for a coming class, I was thinking of the continuous problem many, as me, probably face when organizing Public classes: addressing mix-abilities groups.
It is always an issue but I believe it is quite a challengue when it applies to Language classes.
Although I advocate unconscious adquisition of grammar and lexis, it is not that easy to achieve in classes where completely true beginners are and I usually have to recur to explanation and exemplification in Source Language rather than Target Language, translation, etc. Then, rather than making the most use of a constructive, reflexive approach to learning through activities that foster exposure and later deduction, I sometimes fall into the Presentation- Practice- Production model I'm not passionate about...
But I understand we, teachers, need to consider all means to achieve to the end of helping students learn

Hola ¿Cómo están?
Hope you are all doing well.
Here a little exercise based on SA language +culture: Fútbol, pasión de multitudes and on Ricardo's glossary:
Which ones are right?
1)Match= partido;
2)Defeat= triunfo;
3)Goal= golero/arquero/portero
4)Offside= tiro libre
5)Replay= reanudación del juego
6)Forward= delantero

¡Suerte!
Hasta pronto

¿Cómo están Ustedes? I hope you are doing fine. Gracias to all who answered me about this activity. Well, just to answer everyone, even those who were just thinking about the right choices, #1)Match= partido and
#6)Forward= delantero were the only right ones.
¡Nos vemos pronto!

¡Gracias a mis alumnos de la clase de hoy!
Tnx a lot. At a particular time I lost connection but they were great not only for waiting for me but for continuing doing the task collaboratively.
¡Muuuuuuuuuuuchas gracias!
Well this can happen anytime to anyone. So fingers crossed it happens after you have given the command for an exercise to be done ;-)

Fútbol drives us crazy!

Because, influenced by the great enthusiasm prior to the Argentina-Mexico match, we have decided to raffle chances to take the SPANISH SURVIVAL COURSE free of charge!

Who can participate:

Non-native Spanish speakers, so as to give these chances to people who may or actually need to learn, practice or reinforce Spanish

How to enter:

1- Send us an e-mail with your personal information: full name, country of origin and country of residence. You can also tell us your level or knowledge of Spanish, if any.

2- Referring us to friends: they enter the raffle by sending us an e-mail too and if they mention you as a referrer, you get another chance in the raffle.

Prize:

Survival Spanish online course, starting August 2nd, 2010 for 16 (yes, sixteen) participants.

Closing date:

4 July 2010 (or as far as the Argentina team is playing in the FIFA World Cup, which I hope will be the lastest date)

@Ricardo: I don't recommend you to read the closing date exception of the contest "as far as..." ;-)
In less than an hour we'll be opposing teams :-(...Suerte para ambos

¡Hola a todos! ¡Tanto tiempo! (long time no see)
I wanted to share some material that was left aside when preparing the class on fútbol.
Here is a video- that altough does not have a good resolution- shows the eternal rivalry between Argentina's and Brazil's football teams and fans.
BTW, it was not included because of its poor resolution and being in Portuguese.

Some vocabulary on fútbol:
partido: match
selección /seleccionado: national football/soccer team
equipo/cuadro de fútbol: football/soccer team
hincha: fan
